- I'm a young single mom living in Maryland. I have an eight year old daughter and two pet rats. Until 2009, I was a stay at home mom, living with my partner and his family in a big house in Ellicott City. When her dad and I parted ways, I had no money, no car and nowhere to go. My mother generously offered to take Autumn to her home in California until I had a chance to get on my feet. I lived in a dingy motel, in a friend's spare room, and then with a roommate until I saved up enough money for a car and an place of my own. In June, when everything was finally in place, Autumn came back to live with me in our little apartment in the suburbs. The journey into single motherhood has been a struggle, but I feel better about my place in the world than I ever have before.
